Measuring what matters most with VEGA

For more than six decades, instrumentation and pressure measurement provider VEGA has led the field in level and pressure measurement technology. That expertise is now helping to shape one of industry’s most critical frontiers: hydrogen. As green and blue hydrogen projects scale across South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, VEGA’s instrumentation supports safe, efficient and precise process control from production through to storage and distribution.

Hydrogen creates distinct measurement challenges, including cryogenic temperatures, high pressures and stringent safety demands that require instruments built for extreme conditions. VEGA’s radar level sensors, including the VEGAPULS series, provide non-contact, highly accurate measurement in electrolyser feedwater tanks and storage vessels, and are unaffected by condensation, foam, or vapour that can compromise conventional technologies.

For compressed and liquefied hydrogen storage, VEGABAR pressure sensors provide dependable monitoring across extreme pressure ranges, while electronic differential pressure sensors maintain accuracy despite the fluctuating temperatures typical of cryogenic liquid hydrogen applications. Guided wave radar instruments further support level monitoring in vessels with complex internal geometries or challenging process conditions.

Safety is critical in hydrogen environments given its wide explosive range and low ignition energy. VEGA instruments are certified to ATEX, IECEx and SIL standards, incorporating fail-safe mechanisms and continuous self-monitoring to protect personnel and infrastructure at electrolysis plants, storage facilities, and refuelling stations.

VEGA’s smart sensors integrate directly into digital control systems via IO-Link, Profibus and Ethernet-APL, enabling real-time diagnostics and remote configuration, critical for hydrogen facilities where minimising manual intervention around hazardous areas improves both safety and efficiency. This connectivity supports the broader Industry 4.0 ambitions driving next-generation hydrogen infrastructure.

Intuitive interfaces and quick-start configuration reduce commissioning time, an important advantage as new hydrogen projects move from pilot to full-scale operation. VEGA’s local presence across South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa ensures expert support close to where hydrogen projects are being developed, backed by deep regional industry knowledge.

As the hydrogen economy grows, VEGA stands ready as a technology partner helping producers, storage operators and distributors build safer, more reliable and future-ready hydrogen infrastructure across the region.
